Introducing Mikayla Ford as BC BIG's New Lead

Hello BIG Difference community members!

I’m officially three weeks into my new role as Lead for the BC Behavioural Insights Group and I couldn’t be more excited to be working alongside this fantastic team in this new capacity. While I may be new to the role, I have been watching this team grow since its initiation in 2016, spending the last (almost) three years working as part of it.

Getting a job offer with BC BIG is actually what drew me to Vancouver Island from Toronto, where I lived for the better part of a decade. It was in Toronto that I first encountered the field of applied behavioural science. It was a bit of curiosity and a lot of luck that helped me secure a role at a behavioural economics consulting firm where I supported both external clients and internal operations as the company tripled in size. Following that, I ventured into the field of market research where I once again, joined a small team as they developed a behavioural science practice in an industry unfamiliar with the approach. In Ontario, I worked alongside some very talented people who helped grow the field of applied behavioural science in eastern Canada. I feel very fortunate to be able to maintain that community and continue that growth out here on the west coast.

In my time with BC BIG, I’ve seen how compassion, creativity, teamwork, and strong leadership can come together to accomplish some amazing things. Don’t let its name fool you, BC BIG is actually a pretty small team! But through its collaborative culture and its community connections, BC BIG has not only tackled some very complex challenges in British Columbia, but also introduced over 7500 BC public servants to the theory and practice of behavioural insights, hosted five conferences, co-launched the country’s first behavioural insights certificate program through UBC, and so much more.

I’m deeply grateful to the amazing leaders, mentors, and colleagues who have supported me, encouraged me, and, recently, given me the opportunity to lead BC BIG into the future where even more rewarding experiences await.
